    What is a Knee Injury?

The knee is made up of multiple parts including bone, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and small sacs of fluid known as bursae. If any of these are injured you may find yourself unable to work, in severe pain or with permanent mobility issues.

    Types of Knee Injury Claims

As the knee is made up of multiple parts, there are many different types of knee injuries that can occur. Common types of knee injuries include:

    Knee Sprains

A knee sprain occurs when the ligament is stretched, or in more severe cases, torn. The knee has 4 ligaments: the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the lateral collateral ligament (LCL). The ligaments help to stabilize the knee in it’s forwards and backwards movement and restrict side to side movement. Knee strains often cause severe pain and can cause dysfunction of the normal range of motion of the knee. This may affect a person’s ability to work or perform normal daily activities such as walking.

    Fractures

Fractures of the bones in the knee often occur during road traffic accidents, as a result of high impact being applied to the bone. If any of the bones in your knee, such as the patella, are fractured then surgery may be required to fix it. A knee fracture can take anywhere from 6 weeks to heal however, pain and swelling may be experienced for up to 6 months afterwards. A knee fracture may make it almost impossible to straighten the leg or walk properly also.

    Torn Meniscus

The meniscus is cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between your shinbone and thighbone. If this is torn you will experience pain, swelling and stiffness in the knee. In some cases, resting the knee can allow the meniscus to heal of its own accord however, in more serious cases surgery will be required.

    Knee Bursitis

The knee contains bursae, small sacs of fluid that cushion the knee joint allowing the tendons and ligaments to navigate the joint smoothly. A knee injury may cause the bursae to become inflamed. This can result in pain and reduced mobility in the knee.

    Patellar Tendinitis

Patellar tendinitis occurs when the tendons in the knee become inflamed or have too many microtears for the body to heal. It is usually a result of repeated movement and is common in athletes. It is caused by repetitive overloading of the extensor mechanism of the knee and can require surgical repair in the most drastic cases.

If you have experienced any of the above injuries and feel that it wasn’t your fault, get in touch with The Compensation Experts today!

    Causes of Knee Injuries

Knee injuries can occur for a variety of reasons, in almost any situation. If the knee is jolted, such as in a trip or fall, injury may occur. In addition to this, road traffic accidents or accidents at work may result in impact or trauma to the knee. You may be eligible to make a knee injury claim if the injury occurred as a result of somebody else’s negligence and could have been avoided.

Almost all knee injuries result in pain and restricted movement. Some take longer to heal, ranging from just a few weeks to months; some injuries may even have lifelong consequences. This may impact on your income if you are no longer able to work or are forced to employ support to help you carry out daily activities.
